K. and I bought so many books in India. We had to distribute the weight by layering them between our clothes in our three suitcases. This book satchel by Manhattan luggage maker T. Anthony, which author Tom Stoppard owns and uses, would certainly have come in handy.
Made of leather, wood and steel, the satchel is “no bigger than a breadbox” and carries a small shelf of books. ““If I am on a journey where I only have time to read one-and-a-half books, I never know which one-and-a-half I’ll feel like reading,†Stoppard told David Coleman of the NYT. “So I bring eight.†[Read the complete article.]
Too bad this bag is out of production. I would definitely look into getting me one of those. But, maybe some ingenious entrepreneur will read the NYT Styles article and come up with a knock off?
… I can dream.

This is exactly what I need too, when traveling to India! It’s perfect and so cute looking. You could probably get one made in India…
I’m not surprised this is out of production. It’d be a good idea if you were traveling to The Congo for a month… but who travels anywhere for more than a couple weeks? And even then, how much of that precious time are you going to be allowed to read? All the same, it’d be a cool thing to have and display and laugh at when friends come over and say, “When are you ever going to use that?” and you say, “Yeah, I know.” Or something.
I’ve ordered a custom built leather version of this from a shop I know, and added a shallow holder for stationary, as the one pictured presents on the inside of the open door a typical desk blotter, anyone care to join me, this is not inexpensive but certainly exceptionally unique, to be redundant!
That is a cool satchel indeed! Sandhya I’m so curious to know the titles of the books you bought in India…I will be going there in the summer and would appreciate some recommendations!
I would like to get in touch with Bill G for details regarding the custom version of Stoppard’s Anthony satchel he’s ordered. Please advise soonest.
I would definitely like to join you in purchasing a custom-made version of the book satchel!
I MUST have one of these satchels too! I have been coveting the case and searching for one online ever since clipping the NYT bit on Tom Stoppard. Bill G, please give details about where you ordered your custom model! Thanks …
Bill,
I would appreciate details re where and how to order a custom model of the book satchel.
Thanks so much.

I have contracted with an artisan here on my island (Kauai’) to produce this book sachel, I’m wondering if anyone still has an interest, since I don’t have your emails no idea how to contact, one of you did write me, but I can’t find it now. I’ve had two false starts, this has become quite the little project!
Thanks !
I’d love details on the satchel!
Would love details of satchel maker! Been dreaming of such an object for at least 3+ years.
Bill
Do you have a time frame and cost for the production of the book sachel on Kauai’?
Thank you very much for working on this project.
I only recently discovered the “Stoppard” book satchel photo, and checked the T. Anthony website to no avail. If anyone has discovered how to have the book satchel reproduced please contact me at mpbernosky@yahoo.com, I very much want to obtain one.
I’m wondering if there’s still interest in this, I had one made of Koa, and will do some more for a gift for a family wedding, does anyone still have an interest?
Hi Bill!
